galadhir: The fourth Doctor looking boggled. Text says 'What now!' (What now?!)
[personal profile] galadhir

So, yesterday I started on Casey Johnstone's Couch to Barbell program, in the hopes that weightlifting would prove beneficial to my fibromyalgia and back pain.

It seemed like not very much exercise. 14 minutes worth with mandatory rest periods between each set. Stage One follow-along video

But today I am wiped out. Absolutely flattened. Admittedly I did go to belly dancing while my legs were still like jelly, but I don't think belly dancing is the culprit.

I'm telling myself that the fact that my legs are so sore must mean that it is in fact doing something, and I could definitely do with stronger legs, so onward! I'm on a mandatory rest day today, but she hardly needed to tell me, I'm not fit to do anything today even if I wanted to.

Yesterday I also made over a £10 second hand denim jacket on the model of some gorgeous £60 ones I saw at a festival. Shout out to my local haberdashery for carrying some interesting fabrics for £9 per half metre. I'm pleased with this:

Upcycled denim jacket

I could only do that because yesterday it was cool enough to go in the conservatory where the sewing machine is. Today is not, so I'm not sure what I can achieve today. Maybe some writing?

challenge #4 - Journaling: What is making you smile these days? Create a top 10 list of anything you want to talk about.

Creative: Write from the perspective of a house or other location.

journal prompt 10 fairly random things that make me happy :) the first two are technically joined first place but doing my list that way maked my brain hurty.

1 - music. I am always listening to music and I often fall into holes where a band or singer I like does a collabaration and I end up with even more music to listen to. Oddly enough I rarely do music posts and I'm not even sure why, well, apart from YouTube been a shit with ad blockers (again.)

2 - rugby league. I lose entire weekends to watching NRL and Super League, I tend to record all of the games each week to watch back later if I'm out or working. I got hooked on when I was 8 and here I am years later still loving it. I try to go to games when I can but it's a fairly long journey from Aberdeen to Leeds just to go to Headingley, not like when I lived in Leeds and went to every game, worked at the ground on matchdays too.

3 - lego. I have a lot of LEGO in several storage bricks and some sets still to build. When I'm in Glasgow I tend to buy at least one of the smaller sets that are under £10 from the store there and those are the sets that take maybe half an hour to do all of the builds. My favourites are classic and city although I'm less keen on the branded/franchise tie-ins I did enjoy building twirling Ariel and also because BlueBrixx (German brand) have (had?) licenses for a lot of excellent looking Star Trek and Stargate sets unfortunately postage costs from Germany to Scotland were more expensive than the sets were and my trips to Germany to buy instore were unsuccessful because I found out instore that it was online order only which is frustrating but I got excellent adventures on city breaks out of it.

4 - days out. I'll either go for a long walk to one of our many parks in Aberdeen, the beach or Torry Battery and I'll also get on a bus or a train and go somewhere in the shire or elsewhere in Scotland depending on what I feel like doing. Sometimes I book day trips through local companies selected photos this way from old days out.

5 - audiobooks. My favourite way to read. I'm severely dyslexic and so ridiculously slow with books that when I started getting audiobooks in the post from RNIB it was a game changer for me because I could read a book in a few hours rather than spending weeks reading one sentence. It has taken me almost three months to hit 50 pages of Jeri Taylor's Mosaic and that is for fic research purposes more than a casual read but even with notetaking I expected to be further into it and unfortunately as much as I love Kate, I bounced hard off of the audiobook of it.

6 - one clue crossword. I play this game on my iPad but I have to limit myself to one puzzle a day or I run out very quickly and the developers aren't the quickest at updating this game or their other puzzle games.

7 - working in a pub. Until last summer I'd worked in adult social care for 25 years (give or take) and done everything and after been off for ages (fractured ankle and toe), when I went back there was incidents and unpleasantness so I finally bailed for reasons. Also SSSC and Care Inspectorate want scrapped and restarted from scratch but with input from those who actually do the work and not somebody in Holyrood who has never set foot into a social care setting in their life. *ahem* after I got out I had a couple of months doing absolutely nothing which was great because I felt very burned out for obvious reasons then I got cracking on the job applications and at the beginning of this year I got offered a job in a pub and I really enjoy it more than I thought I would.

8 - Star Trek: Voyager. Show has been my *favourite Star Trek since it started on BBC2 when I was in high school (year 7 or year 8 I think) and I watched it all, then I dipped in and out whenever it got repeated over the years on various telly channels. Two years ago when I was getting sick a lot (aka chest infections hell!) I fell back in to this show so hard and have barely come back up for air since, this time around I'm finally shipping Janeway/Chakotay after years of being "yeah, I see it, not really feeling it" and now it's like "yeah, feeling it all" :) maybe it's an old age thing (not that 41 is old but some days...) and on the back of falling hard into it I've got an ongoing series that I update whenever a new fic or meta is ready and most of my fic, wallpapers and icons are Voyager with some Prodigy thrown in too because it is a natural successor to Voyager and I'm still mad about it's second time cancellation and there are not enough middle fingers on my hands for Paramount.
*I've watched almost all of them although I need to go back to Discovery, Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks at some point because previous attempts to watch those were not successful.

9 - cinema. I got to the cinema a lot and with Sky offering two tickets each month I try to use those codes up first then pay for at least one more film so that I get to see three films each month and Vue are excellent value with £5 tickets. I also keep an eye out for the eventually reopening Belmont Cinema offering free film events at Cowdray Hall because that is an excellent choice for these things, I watched It's A Wonderful Life there just before Christmas and it was such a good way to spend part of the afternoon.

10 - rhinos. My precious babies. They have been my favourite animals for so long that I legit cannot remember when I got all obsessed with them. I have a little collection of Rhino cuddly todays and other trinkets but space and storage are a major issue in my home (bedsits are too small even for one person!) so I have to quite selective with what I add to the collection. One of my rhino cuddly toys travels all over the world with me and those rare times I forget him, my travels feel wrong somehow.

creative prompt

hmm, can't think of anything just yet :)

How's everyone doing? I'm having a devil of a time with a particular WIP. I seem to have let myself be distracted by other things (reading fanfic, re-reading Murderbot, procrastinating in general--omg even vacuuming).

Why is it so hard to just open the folder and work on it? I like the story, and I like where it's going. But I'm at a point where decisions must be made to move forward.

Decision fatigue is definitely a thing.

How's everyone else doing?

1. What was the most sick that you've ever been? It’s a toss-up between when I had pleurisy one Christmas (I was about seven or eight), swine flu, or covid.

2. What disease are you afraid of getting? Alzheimer’s - though I’m not sure if I’m more terrified of me getting it, or Li.

3. Are you a big baby when it comes to taking medicine/shots for your illnesses? Not at all. But I am both very forgetful and pretty susceptible to the “I feel better, I don’t need this anymore” trap - currently going through it with my asthma meds, actually.

4. Is going to the doctor really THAT bad? Yes. Especially with my joints - I’ve spent thirty years not being listened to.

5. Would you have the flu twice a month if you were paid $1,000 for having it? Absolutely not. I’ve only had the flu twice in my life, and both times it knocked me off my feet for 8–10 days. I’ll happily never have it again. There’s a reason I get my flu jab every year.

Challenge #3
Journaling prompt: What are your favourite summer-associated foods?

Strawberries and cream, obviously. Is it even summer if you haven’t eaten strawberries until your fingers are stained red and you feel a little too full but still somehow tempted to go back for just one more? Ideally they’re a little overripe and still warm from the sun, and the cream is cold and just barely sweetened. That’s the classic.

No photo description available. But my favourite summer foods aren’t just about flavour - they’re rooted in memory, tangled up with the smell of grass and sunblock, the buzz of bees, the distant whine of a hosepipe being uncoiled.

When I was a kid, my dad had a huge garden - and not just that, he also had an allotment, so we were always growing something. It felt like magic, honestly, how much came out of the ground every year. Apples, pears, plums, raspberries, strawberries, gooseberries, loganberries, rhubarb. I think at one point we even had blackcurrants and redcurrants, though I might be imagining that part. The raspberries were my favourite - I’d eat them straight off the plant, warmed by the sun, until I made myself absolutely sick. (Still worth it. Every time.)

We had so much fruit that my childhood summers were full of jam-making and crumbles and endless bowls of stewed fruit with custard. We'd freeze some too - bags and bags of berries packed away for winter, though somehow the frozen ones never quite tasted the same.

And then there were the vegetables. Potatoes, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, carrots, cabbage, marrow. I loved the peas most of all - so sweet and crisp, straight from the pod. But I wasn’t allowed to help with the pea harvest anymore after a certain age. There was an incident involving a suspiciously empty bucket and one very full stomach. (Apparently, you can’t be trusted when you come back with more pod than pea. Who knew?)

There’s something about food you’ve watched grow that tastes different - more alive, maybe, more rooted. Summer still tastes like that for me: the green snap of a fresh pod, fruit sticky on your hands, the scent of crushed tomato leaves, and the way the air smells when it’s hot and full of bees and pollen and everything’s growing. Strawberries and cream are just the tip of the memory.

Li and I are having one of those moments where our echolalia triggers each other.

I said 'new new new book review', which is the name of the template I made in Cava for writing/posting book reviews.

So now she's sitting there, in a very David Attenborough-esque voice, going 'Blue maomao'

And every time she says 'blue', I start singing the Eiffel 65 song.

Life in a neurotypical household must be so boring. And very quiet.

Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut. Darkly funny history of the lead up to the in-universe end of the world.

Singled Out: How Singles are Stereotyped, Stigmatized, and Ignored, And Still Live Happily Ever After by Bella DePaulo. A kind of hilarious hit job on the American cultural obsession with marriage.

In TV I finished:

Murderbot (season 1): I think this got better as the season went on. I have some mixed feelings about how the PreservationAux team was adjusted from the book and seemed more slapstick than competent sometimes but the finale was great and I love them and Murderbot with my whole heart. Love how much Sanctuary Moon content we got! Season 2 already renewed yay!

I also watched The Old Guard 2 and it was not great but I enjoyed seeing the characters again. KPop Demon Hunters, however, I fully recommend for a fun time.

And Foundation season 3 is back! Let's goooooo!

Extremely good finale for Murderbot! I'm feeling pleasantly melancholic now the series has finished, but at least I get to watch it all again. Also, it's been renewed for a second season!

Writing technique comms on DW?

Does anyone know of any (currently active) comms on DW focussed on writing craft or technique? [personal profile] troyswann was asking and all I can think of are writing challenge comms like https://getyourwordsout.dreamwidth.org which are about producing words, not the craft of writing.

I also have a bunch of links saved, mostly from tumblr, on things like "worldbuilding" and "how to write fight scenes" etc. It's here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1cMbhguAkJxfS9eJcacre7RpPutUo8qkx/view?usp=sharing

What other writing technique or info resources or posts do you like?

Mistakes have been made. I went on that social media site. The one I keep telling myself not to go on. The one I usually only go on to get pictures from.

And I came across... um... this:

At which point, Bob! went:
Darren Cahill isn’t just a brilliant tennis mind - he’s a warlock, an ancient practitioner of binding magic and protective wards, hiding arcane symbols in strategy notebooks and stringing spells into racquets. Every serve Jannik hits is laced with intention; every missed shot by an opponent is no accident.

He made a deal years ago: power in exchange for silence and subtlety. In return, his players would rise. But there’s a cost. The magic must be fed - sometimes with injuries, sometimes with reputation, sometimes with blood.

[EDIT] 5-ish hours later and I'm about to post a fic to AO3 with the summary Darren Cahill works in shadows - in chalk and string tension, in whispered spells and bloodless offerings. Rituals. Sigils. Subtle magics scratched into hardcourt and whispered into clay.

But grass is different. Older. Easily offended. It doesn't like to be used. And Wimbledon remembers him.

What I'm Reading Wednesday

badfalcon: (You Can't Kill Me... There'll Be Paperwo)
[personal profile] badfalcon
What are you currently reading?

Emilia Hart - Weyward I've been wanting to read this for ages and it was absolutely worth the wait. I only started it yesterday but I'm already uhh 53% through
Kelley Armstrong - Bitten A comfort re-read, dipping in and out as my mood pleases. I have so much love for Jeremy, for Clay, for the pack
Annie Worsley - Windswept My current borrowbox read - I'm about 1/3 of the way through, and I'm not quite sure what I think of it
Alice Roberts - Ancestors I have a teenytinyhugeass crush on Alice, not gonna lie. I'm about 75% through and should hopefully finish it soon

What did you recently finish reading?

Stephen Fry - Mythos 5/5 stars. Greek mythology at its most charming, clever, and chaotic. Stephen Fry retells these ancient stories with so much warmth and humour, I felt like I was being let in on the juiciest gossip from Olympus. Smart, sharp, and ridiculously entertaining — a perfect read for mythology lovers and curious mortals alike.
T Kingfisher - A House with Good Bones 5/5 stars. What starts as an odd visit home turns into a quietly horrifying unraveling of memory, family, and something deeply wrong under the wallpaper. It’s southern gothic with teeth, and I loved every uncanny, bug-filled page.

What do you think you’ll read next?

Mary Shelley - Frankenstein
Erin Sterling - The Kiss Curse
Poppy Z Brite - Exquisite Corpse

three tiny joys, glimmers, or moments of soft comfort from today

💻 I did a solo payment run at work today. There was a lot of panic, but I got through it - everything balanced, everything submitted, and no one needed to rescue me.

📚 My gently used book club book arrived and it looks awesome! I love when second-hand books still have personality but are in really good shape.

🎾 Jannik won his Wimbledon quarterfinal against Sunshine - and there was a ridiculously adorable hug between Simone and Darren afterward. Just look at them: 😍

That’s me for today. If you feel like sharing your glimmers, I’d love to read them 💛
Be gentle with yourself, especially if the good things were hard to find.

journal prompt:
During summer I'm partial to a solero especially the exotic flavour. I'm not all that keen on ice cream so it's quite a thing for me to actually like one, I prefer ice pops and ice lollys.

While I make it more during the summer mushroom and leek spaghetti is something that I tend to eat year round because it's so quick and easy to make which is always a bonus for someone with my disabilities and I can use pre-slice frozen veg to make too.

creative prompt:

I'm pretty sure I made summery/seasonal icons of foods during the old sunshine and I'm also quite sure I've done some for [community profile] fan_flashworks too. I'll look throuhg my icons tag and stock tag later on and come back with some linkys.

Although the season starts in February and ends in October I love watching rugby league throughout the summer and make sure to either record games or watch them on the telly whenever I can, I do try to get to Leeds a couple of times a year to go to Leeds Rhinos home games in the league and sometimes challenge cup. I used to go to Wembley most years but have bailed since they changed challenge cup final from May/August bank holidays to a random weekend in June. I love both Super League and NRL. Watching league whether it's a the ground or on the telly makes me happy and I'll happily listen to radio commentary too.

I don't do poetry.

I'm quite active on DW and post most days, under f-lock because that's what I've always done form my earliest days on LJ in 2002 or so and haven't really wanted to changed that other the years either. Basically, the windows are open and doors on the snib so just come in for a bit if you want to :)
There is a handfull of public posts and the one's tagged welcome to cat's dw are probably the main ones to read with it having the intro post and my sort of but not quite policy on public posts too. I think those are some of stickys too actually, been a while since I looked logged out.

creative prompt:

I'm severely dyslexic and I write fan fic, make icons and wallpapers, occasionally I'll make videos and fanmixes/fic playlists. All of these can be found over at [community profile] alittleimprobable and if you want a specific fandom, character or whatever then the tags list is the place to look but I do not tag by pairings because those took up way too much space and more so for the one and done fandoms than the fandoms I write in more frequently. As always, feel free to subscribe to any tags that are of interest to you and of course posting frequency varies from several times a week to maybe one or two a month. I do also crosspost to Squidge and AO3 but tend to be slower at that and not everything I create ends up getting posted to the archives anyway.

During an early round of [community profile] communal_creators one of my chosen projects was to work on a dolls wardrobe for Sam, one of my two Barbie dolls and I recently got around to posting the photos and doing a bit of a write up of the project more generally. I do have enough left over to make a wardrobe for Daniel but I haven't got around to it as yet because the first one was quite time consuming. It's this way :)
